The newest attraction for EPCOT, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is set to open this summer. In recent weeks a large starship has appeared in front of the new roller coaster’s entrance.
The ship is based on the Nova Corps ships as seen in the film franchise, and marks the first time a “Starblaster” has ever been built to scale in real life.
Let’s take a look around this colorful set piece in the park, and go over some of the latest news and rumors about the new attraction, in today’s construction update. Check out the video below for additional footage of the ship.
Approaching the front of the attraction from inside the park it becomes apparent that this ship feels much larger when you are there than it appears in photographs.
The ship is modeled after the Xandarian’s Nova Corps Starblaster ships from the Guardians of the Galaxy film series, and features plenty of details to see as you get closer.
With trees and people within the frame of a photo it kind of gives you a better idea of how high off the ground the ship is, and how far stretched its pointed wings are.
The ship is perfectly centered in front of the old Universe of Energy building, and will make for a great photo opportunity once the new ride is complete.
Looking closer at the details, there is still plenty of work left to do on this ship. The knuckle joints where the wings meet the ship are being covered with decorative pieces this week. The one connecting to the center-right is still showing a seam where they have fused together two separate pieces. The same piece on the left is already finished, now hiding the seam well.
The paint job on the ship features subtle weathering and interesting tones on top of the bright yellow, to add some character. Small Xandarian logos can be seen in multiple places.
The stand it is sitting on is still receiving work. Much like the knuckle joints were covered between the wings and the body, it looks like the bolts holding the ship to its base will eventually be covered as well.
In fact, if you look very closely underneath the ship, right where it sits upon the stand, you can see clear through to the other side. There is no way Disney would allow you to see THROUGH this immaculately designed set piece.
How the stand will be decorated or covered is still unknown, but work is also going on within this structure as well. It is rumored that special fog effects and lighting effects are being installed within the ship and its wings.
After these effects have been fully installed, then the finishing touches will likely be installed around its stand. Sound effects will also be introduced to round out the realistic touches needed to bring this ship to life.
Looking around the back, we can see all of the mechanics that make this ship fly (within the fictional Marvel Universe, of course).
The sides of the building, which were painted a rust-brown color for the longest time, have now been repainted to gray.
While we were hoping the roof would receive functioning solar panels, like the earlier the concept art seemed to depict, we still only have decorative gray panels instead.
Silver paneling is being installed along the front of the entrance building. The left side of the building appears to be complete, but blue insulation can still be seen along the right side as it awaits its silver panel installation.
The Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind attraction will be the world’s longest indoor roller coaster. It will feature Disney’s first backwards launch, and the coaster cars will rotate during the ride.
An exact date has not yet been announced, but Disney has said it will be opening Summer 2022. Many believe it could open during the month of May, and that we may even see Annual Passholder previews in the weeks leading up to the grand opening. This would be similar to the opening of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure last year.

Kind of disappointing to see it with that support structure. It makes nothing more than a giant model instead of being suspended in space.
