Today, the Universal Orlando Resort has officially announced that the Jurassic World VelociCoaster will be opening at Islands of Adventure in Summer 2021. The new attraction, which recently finished its track installation, is being built in the Jurassic Park section of the park.
Universal says this new roller coaster will reach speeds up to 70 miles per hour, and will be the state’s fastest and tallest launch coaster. The new attraction will feature a fierce pack of Velociraptors, as well as many innovative new coaster maneuvers. In addition to the announcement, the company released a couple pieces of concept art—as well as a short teaser video, which offer us a glimpse of what the coaster and its trains will look like. UPDATED: Video with additional analysis added below.
From the new concept art we can confirm that the trains will in fact carry 6 cars, each with two rows of two. We can also confirm that the design of the trains include the same style restraints as Busch Gardens Williamsburg’s Pantheon. And they will be styled with blue and black colors as well as LED accents and headlamps.
While the ride will be based on the Jurassic World film, today’s announcement confirms that the land itself will retain the “Jurassic Park” name. There is now absolutely no doubt that the VelociCoaster will be a Jurassic World ride, and as expected, it will feature actors from the film. Universal even gave us some details on the new attraction’s plot:
Guests will join the original cast of the films – Chris Pratt as Owen Grady, Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire Dearing and BD Wong as Dr. Henry Wu – as Jurassic World unveils the next evolution of its “carnivore expansion”: the VelociCoaster, where riders embark on a high-speed chase and feel the rush of the hunt while racing alongside a nimble Velociraptor pack.
Other rumored details were also confirmed, such as the coaster’s two launches, its top speed of 70 miles per hour, track length of more than 4,700 feet, and maximum height of 155 feet. The official details also use the word “paddock” to describe the area of the ride featuring the velociraptors. Check out more details for the VelociCoaster below:
- Accelerate through two pulse-pounding launches, the fastest reaching 70 mph in 2.4 seconds
- Encounter a one-of-a-kind, 360-degree barrel roll right above the Islands of Adventure lagoon
- Experience a zero-gravity inverted stall that will send riders upside down across 100 feet of track in a jaw-dropping maneuver that is the first of its kind
- Go airborne during the towering “Top Hat,” which propels riders 155 feet in the air and then immediately into an 80 degree drop – Universal’s steepest drop yet
- Brace for a total of 12 heart-pounding seconds of airtime – the thrilling sensation of weightlessness riders feel when they’re lifted from their seats – throughout the entire adventure
Universal Orlando’s Twitter account says the ride’s minimum height requirement will be 51″ (129.5 cm) tall.
Concept renderings in the teaser video also seem to show fire effects on the left and right side of the attraction’s entrance, as seen with the coaster train passing by. It also appears to confirm that the top hat maneuver will not be utilizing an “anticipation stall,” at least if the timing shown in the video is to be taken literally.
In addition to revealing details for this new roller coaster, Universal is reminding us of the other attractions around the land inside of Islands of Adventure, and they appear to be hinting at new food options inspired by Isla Nublar coming to the island. Fingers crossed that this means we get our very own Isla NuBar, like the one in Universal Hollywood featuring dinosaur-inspired tiki drinks.
Jurassic World VelociCoaster will be the next exciting addition to Jurassic Park at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Only in this immersive land can visitors come face-to-face with life-size dinosaurs in incredible theme park experiences, including Jurassic Park River Adventure, where a leisure raft ride turns into a daring eight-story plunge to escape a ferocious T. rex; and Raptor Encounter, where guests can test their bravery and get up-close to Velociraptor Blue and the newest additions to the paddock – baby raptors – while learning more about the clever carnivores. Guests can also satisfy their cravings with all-new delectable food items inspired by Isla Nublar.
