The official opening dates for the second Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attraction, Rise of the Resistance, have been announced. The new ride will open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on December 5th of this year, and at Disneyland on January 17, 2020.
Rumors were swirling yesterday that an announcement might be made today, and that Walt Disney World’s version would be opening first. Some have said that the Disneyland version has run into technical issues that will take longer to resolve. Since the Florida iteration started construction later, it is assumed that they were able to avoid the issues faced in California. More information about today’s announcement below.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is already open in Disneyland Park. It will be opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort on August 29th. The land would open at both locations with only one of the two planned rides online, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run.
Disney has said previously that Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance would be opening at both parks “later this year.” Today marks the first time they have admitted that it will not be opening this year for the Disneyland Resort.
Here is what Disney had to say today:
We’ve got some exciting news to share today with the galaxy. We’re opening Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Dec. 5 at Walt Disney World Resort. If this date sounds familiar, many of our fans will recognize it as Walt Disney’s birthday. What better way to honor the ultimate storyteller than by introducing the most immersive and advanced attraction ever imagined in a Disney Park.
When it opens, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will blur the lines between fantasy and reality and will put guests in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance. Guests will be recruited to join Rey and General Organa at a secret base. Along the way, they will be captured by a First Order Star Destroyer. With the help of some heroes of the Resistance, they break out and must escape the Star Destroyer, protect the secret base, and stay one step ahead of Kylo Ren.
As soon as work is completed at Walt Disney World, Imagineers will head back to California to complete their mission at Disneyland Resort where Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will open on Friday, Jan. 17.
We discussed many of the elements of this new innovative attraction on an early episode of the ParkStop Podcast. It will combine multiple ride systems and feature a trackless ride vehicle design. Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be receiving another trackless dark ride in the Spring of 2020. That’s when Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be opening.
