TRON Lightcycle / Run Officially Open at Magic Kingdom

The newest attraction for the Walt Disney World Resort has officially opened to all guests. Located within the Tomorrowland area of Magic Kingdom, the TRON Lightcycle / Run roller coaster attraction is the largest expansion for the park since New Fantasyland opened in 2012.

Opening-day Cast Members participated in a special ribbon cutting on April 3, 2023

Disney says that the new ride is the fastest roller coaster at Walt Disney World, and incorporates onboard audio and lighting, “as well as a specially crafted safety restraint that allows riders to lean forward on the cycles.”

The experience of TRON begins before guests board Lightcycles. After passing beneath the dazzling attraction canopy, they will enter a Digitizer for another powerful preview of what’s in store when they join the games.

Launching onto the Grid is an unforgettable experience for Users as their powerful Lightcycles arc gracefully beneath the towering attraction canopy and charge into a mysterious game world of light, sound and speed.

This attraction requires that bags and larger loose articles be placed in a free locker, which are located within the queue for the attraction prior to boarding. Guests can take smaller items, like phones, sunglasses, and wallets with them on the ride, but are required to stow them in a small compartment located at the front of each seat.

Lockers are obtained and reopened using your MagicBand, park ticket, or a free locker ticket acquired from a Cast Member nearby.

Guests must be at least 48 inches to ride. The new coaster employs unique seating that mimics the Lightcycle vehicles seen in the Tron Legacy film. Those who are unable to ride facing forward, or have certain body dimensions, have the option to ride in a specially designed ride vehicle in the back row of select trains.

This modified row features more traditional coaster seats, where riders can sit upright. It is also the ADA ride vehicle, with a unique door that can open to allow guests to transfer from a standard wheelchair to the vehicle.

Currently the ride is not offering a standby queue. That means you cannot simply get into line to ride. All guests must join the Virtual Queue, or purchase a Lightning Lane, to be able to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run at this time.

Guests with a Magic Kingdom Park Reservation can request to join the virtual queue to experience the attraction via the My Disney Experience app beginning at 7:00 AM daily. (They have been running out within seconds, so be ready and refresh the join screen repeatedly in the seconds leading to the time.) You do not have to be in the park to join the Virtual Queue in the morning. A second drop for Virtual Queue slots happens at 1:00 PM, but you must be inside the park to participate in that one.

You must arrive within the one-hour time period of your Boarding Group. Follow along with which group is being called by keeping your eye on the app. Ensure you have push notifications on and you will be alerted when it is your time. They are not allowing late entries at this time. Be prepared to wait in line to get onto the actual ride, up to an hour (or more) once you check in for your Virtual Queue return.

Guests can also purchase an Individual Lightning Lane pass to ride this ride, while supplies last. On-site resort guests get to purchase Lightning Lanes beginning at 7:00 AM. All other guests can purchase them beginning at park open time. You do not need to be inside the park to purchase an Individual Lightning Lane.

The Lightning Lane wait will be less when you arrive to the attraction, bypassing a large section of the queue you would otherwise be waiting in with a regular Boarding Group. Guests can also select a return time (from remaining options) when purchasing an Individual Lightning Lane, whereas Boarding Group times are assigned to you.

A new retail experience has debuted with the attraction, offering apparel, collectible pins, toys and light-up accessories all inspired by the TRON films and the new attraction. Guests can also purchase and customize their own TRON action figures.

Energy Bytes, a new quick-service kiosk near TRON Lightcycle / Run, will put a fun spin on global cuisines. Items both savory and sweet offer nods to regional food offerings at Shanghai Disneyland, where the first TRON gateway is located. Selections include:

  • Digital Dumplings – Choose from Buffalo Chicken: Chicken Dumplings, Blue Cheese Powder and Cayenne Pepper Broth; or Beef & Broccoli: Beef Dumplings, Broccoli Pesto and Ginger-Soy Broth
  • Strawberry IceOform – Strawberry Ice Cream Mochi, Graham Crackers and Cheesecake Foam
  • Watermelon Refresher – A frozen beverage with Yuzu and Ginger
  • Chocolate Doughnut Holes with Mocha Sauce
  • Joffrey’s Cold Brew Coffee with Mocha Sauce

Disney has not released any information about how long the attraction will require Virtual Queue to ride. Currently, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT also requires a Virtual Queue reservation or Individual Lightning Lane pass to ride. All other attractions are operating with standby lines as usual.
